NEPAL: Kala Pattar

The Trek to Kala Pattar

(Everest Base Camp area)

In March of 1998, I went on a trek to Kala Pattar (sometimes referred to as an Everest Base Camp trek) in Nepal. I had 3-1/2 weeks off work, during which I trekked for two weeks, and spent some time in Kathmandu as well as Singapore. First, some background: Around November of 1997, I started planning my trip by doing research on the Internet (visiting web sites of companies offering trekking packages) as well as reading up on guidebooks, and monitoring the rec.travel.asia newsgroup. None of my friends were able to join me, so I was intent on doing the trip alone if I had to. Anyways, one night while reading messages in rec.travel.asia, I had the idea to post a message stating my plans, and to invite anyone interested to join me. It was a longshot, but what the heck.

I received replies from several people, most of whom were a little undecided themselves, since the trip was still four or five months away. Surprisingly I did, however, receive a serious reply from a girl named Jacqueline who lived in Singapore. She had been to Nepal before to trek in a different region, and wanted to go back again, but had no one to go with. It all began from there, and after what seemed like a hundred emails back and forth, we learned more about each other. We also figured out some of the logistical problems and planned out a trip itinerary so that we could go to the places we each wanted to see.

I have never done anything like this before, and was admittedly a little bit apprehensive about agreeing to go with someone I had never met before. What if she had a really annoying habit that I just couldn't stand? Ugh. Just the same, at her end I'm sure she had even more doubts and questions running through her mind. She told me her mother was a more than a little concerned, and who could blame her? I was merely text on her computer screen, and my sincerity could have been a false front. Anyways, she fell for it (Hi Jacq!) and on the following pages you will find details of our trip.
